Chances are if your parents or grand-parents were switched onto hi-fi in the 60's they might have been the proud owners of Quad hi-fi. If they were, there is a chance that these treasures are now hidden somewhere at the back of their garage or upstairs in the attic in a state of disrepair . The units pictured here required total refurbishment. New power transformers with greater tolerances to accept current production KT66's were installed on the Quad II power amps and alot of components were upgraded in all 3 units . Lets have a look....
|
|---|
Firstly we attended to the Quad II power amps. One power transformer was burnt out and needed changing but both were upgraded. The pic on the left shows the transformer removed from its can after being heated in the oven.On the right a newly wound transformer is ready to go. |
|---|
All resistors and capacitors were upgraded .Sprague Atom filter caps with larger values were installed. These will add better bass and more body to the sound. |
|---|
The Quad 22 preamp though a design triumph ,is incredibly fiddly to work on. With its point to point wiring t'out , resistor and capacitor legs need to be shaped and bent to fit appropriatly. |
|---|
The end result. There is something special about systems with matched components designed hand in hand .Thus is the case here the Quads deliver the most musical presentation your ever likely to hear. |
